The Manchineel
The Manchineel is a species of common tree that some might confuse with an apple tree as its fruits are so similar. It is considered by some to be the most dangerous tree in the world!!!
Both its fruit, its foliage, its trunk and its sap are toxic. If you are unfortunate enough to touch it, you risk very serious burns to your skin.
You should therefore not shelter under it during an episode of rain because the water becomes toxic on contact.
The fruit is even more dangerous since it causes swelling of the throat which can be fatal.
You must therefore be very vigilant, especially if you have children or animals.
On the outskirts of the village Pierre et Vacances, you can find manchineel trees along the beaches. They are usually marked with a red line in tourist areas.
However, the people of Martinique live with it, learning very early on the danger of this tree and we can see many walkers or runners passing under it in light rain, picnicking nearby.
